Decommissioning Scope
Racks, servers, storage arrays, network infrastructure, UPS systems, PDUs, cabling, and the associated equipment that accumulates around them — from a single cabinet consolidation through to full facility closure. Data centre decommissioning differs from ordinary IT disposal in three ways: the equipment is dense and heavy, much of it is still live when planning starts, and the volume of data-bearing media in a single rack can exceed an entire office refresh. Each of those changes the plan rather than just the logistics.

Why the Survey Matters
Most decommissioning problems are access problems discovered too late. Lift capacity, floor loading, door widths, loading bay availability, out-of-hours restrictions, and the order in which cabinets can come down without disturbing live services all shape the schedule far more than the asset count does. The site survey establishes these constraints before dates are committed, and produces the inventory that everything downstream reconciles against. Colocation sites add contractual conditions on removal windows and make-good obligations that are worth reading carefully before the first rack is touched.
Working Around Live Environments
Few decommissions happen in an empty room. Where equipment is being retired alongside infrastructure that must stay in service, work is phased so that dependencies come down in a safe order and no live service loses redundancy without warning. Cabling is traced and labelled before anything is disconnected, power is isolated in a controlled sequence, and each phase is signed off before the next begins. This is slower than a clearance and considerably cheaper than an outage.
Value Recovery
Enterprise network and server hardware often holds significant residual value, and data centre equipment tends to hold it better than end-user devices because the secondary market for enterprise infrastructure is deeper and less fashion-driven. Switches, routers, servers, storage controllers, and optics are tested, graded, and routed to resale where viable, with the settlement offsetting project cost. We maximise recovery without ever compromising the sanitisation sequence: nothing is sold before its media has been destroyed and certified.
Audit Evidence
You receive a full asset register reconciled against the original survey inventory, certificates of destruction referencing individual serial numbers, environmental and reuse reporting, and a settlement statement where value was recovered. For regulated environments the reconciliation is the critical artefact — it demonstrates that the number of data-bearing devices that left the facility matches the number that were destroyed, with no unexplained gap.
